relevance to all, and in particular, to the
marginalized sections of the society. It should
be a quality education; excellence that makes
a difference in the society. What is excellence?
Excellence is multidimensional; holistic. For us
educated individuals, excellence is choosing
the poor and the marginalized especially the girl
children as its main target group for education
and empower them, retaining every child
admitted to the school and see to it that he/
she completes education. It is also building the
multifaceted personality of every child which
includes all quotients-Physical, Intellectual,
emotional and spiritual leading to total quality
enables the child to enjoy fullness of life.
Motivating every fully developed individual
to contribute towards creating a humane and
just society and thus transform the world to
make it a better living place and seeking the
collaboration of teachers, parents and the
society in order to attain quality through a
dynamic and creative leadership.
India has the largest pool of educators in the
world. It has more than two million trained
Scientists and technicians. 36% of NASA
employees are Indians. 34% Microsoft engineers
and 12% scientists are Indians. India has one of
largest higher education systems in the world.
But the unavailability of essential resources,
namely a good ‘quality education’ at primary
level continues to deprive the poor of availing
many opportunities in life even today.
There are certain emerging concerns at this level
which need to be addressed. The rural literacy
rate calls for an interventions strategy that will
educate the poor and needy. The tribals, dalits,
SC/ST who are easily displaced by the rich and
the powerful do not show stability in education.
The education of the girls/females in the rural
areas calls for attention. Gender discrimination
towards the females and the gender ratio in
northern states is alarming. The dropouts
Ambition by itself never gets anyone anywhere until it forms a partnership with hard work.

at primary and even at secondary level are
substantial in number. They generally belong to
low economic strata of the society and needed
to be shown direction.
Other concerns expand beyond primary level
of education. Overcrowded classes are general
feature of most of the existing schools t which
causes zero tolerance for failures. Paying
individual attention to tap the potentialities
is not an easy task for the teachers. There is
a growing inner insecurity and restlessness
among students created by the competitive
world, media, family fragmentation,
individualism, hedonism, and consumerism
and the like leading to violence and suicide.
To create a society free from violence; a place
where there will be peace and harmony, truth,
justice, equality and freedom from corruption,
gender discrimination and social evils we
would need to develop individuals who will be
conscientious, compassionate, constructive
human beings having respect for life in all its
forms and the environment and will be morally
strong to face challenges of life
The era of Excellence for the privileged few
should be the story of the past.We must consider
that in the new order, quality schooling is the
birthright of every child born on this planet.
Quality in Education is determined by quality
of life in school. We can’t have performing
students without performing teachers,
inspiring leaders, enlightened community and
supportive government.
I dream that 10 years hence there will be 100%
literacy in our country with the reduced gap
between the rich and the poor. It is my hope
that every child who enters the portal of any
institution would feel fulfilled at the experience
of growth of one’s potentialities and he/she in
turn would work towards the transformation of
society to create just and humane world.
